About the Partnership
Understanding the Africa Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Partnership.
Our Mission
The Africa Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) Partnership is a collaborative research network dedicated to advancing the science, practice, and policy of marine-based carbon dioxide removal across the African continent.
We bring together researchers, institutions, and policymakers from across Africa to build a shared understanding of how the continent's vast ocean and coastal resources can contribute to global climate solutions — while ensuring environmental integrity, community benefit, and scientific rigour.
Our mission is to become the leading platform for marine CDR research in Africa, generating evidence that informs both regional climate strategies and global carbon removal efforts.
Governance
The Partnership operates through a collaborative governance structure designed to ensure inclusive decision-making and scientific independence.
Steering Committee: Provides strategic direction, comprising senior researchers from each participating region (West, East, North, and Southern Africa), plus representation from the Secretariat.
Secretariat: The operational arm, managing day-to-day activities, communications, and coordination across the network. Based at the University of Cape Town with liaison offices in Accra and Nairobi.
Thematic Working Groups: Self-organising groups of researchers focused on specific CDR approaches (e.g., Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, Blue Carbon, Direct Ocean Capture).
Advisory Board: External experts in marine science, climate policy, and carbon markets who provide independent advice on strategy and research priorities.
Member Institutions
The Partnership includes leading research institutions across the African continent, united by a shared commitment to advancing marine CDR science.
West Africa: University of Lagos (Nigeria), University of Ghana, Cheikh Anta Diop University (Senegal), KNUST (Ghana), University of Bamako (Mali), UENR (Ghana)
East Africa: University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Makerere University (Uganda)
North Africa: Mohammed V University (Morocco), University of Algiers (Algeria), University of Khartoum (Sudan)
Southern Africa: University of Cape Town (South Africa)
Island Nations: University of Antananarivo (Madagascar)
We welcome expressions of interest from additional African research institutions aligned with our mission.
